FUE Employer of The Year Awards Dinner 2024

We took part in the 18th Annual Employer of The Year Awards Dinner organized by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The awards are aimed at promoting and encouraging the maintenance of good relations between employers and the observance of fair and equitable conditions of employment. The Uganda Insurers Association was the Lead Sponsor of this year's edition running under the theme: Employer Competitiveness in the Post Covid-19 Era.

The event commenced with remarks from the CEO of FUE – Douglas Opio who thanked Uganda Insurers Association & other FEU partners & sponsors for making the awards a reality. He underscored the significance of Gender equality and empowering women to compete effectively in the employment sector.

UIA CEO - Jonan Kisakye thanked FUE for flying the employers’ flag high while emphasizing the important role that employers play. He stressed the importance of insurance to employers decrying the low uptake of the mandatory Worker's Compensation that stands at only 1% of employers. He encouraged them to risk-proof their work force, resources and assets. He also highlighted how medical insurance safeguards employee health and productivity. Jonan urged employers to lead with insurance reassuring them of the industry’s solidity with figures showing almost UGX 2 Billion in Claims paid out per day. He therefore called on the employers to trust insurers and advised them to seek redress through IRA & UIA in case of any grievances.

Head of Cooperation of the Embassy of Belgium - Luc Pirson said that the Employer Of Year Awards are a vital component for progressing towards a just society and acknowledged FUE for championing fair workplace standards and social protection in the employment sector. FUE Chairperson & Managing Director of National Water & Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) - Dr. Silver Mugisha stressed the importance of adhering to top-tier human resource practices, promoting competitiveness and continuous learning as essential elements of thriving in the business.

The categories awarded were: Best Refugee Employer won by Maria Investments, Disability Inclusion Award won by Cipla, Best NGO won by NUDIPU, Agriculture (Rwenzori Region) Award won by Nyakatonzi, Best SME Award won by Young Agro-Green Africa Network, Sexual Reproductive Health Award won by Engineering Solutions, Best Urban Refugee Employer won by Hubby Elite, Best Service Sector Award won by Carrefour and the Best Talent Management Award won by Grant Thornton. The Overall category winners were: MTN Uganda - Gold Winner, Nile Breweries - Silver Winner & Uganda Breweries - Bronze Winner.

Other speakers included: Chairperson of the FUE Award Technical Committee - Brenda Kyasiimire Jabel, a representative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director’s Office of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and the Enabel Uganda Resident Representative - Tom Vennete.
