The Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) Team led by Board Vice Chairman – Paul Muwanga and CEO – Jonan Kisakye met with the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to discuss issues pertinent to both bodies. The meeting took place at the URA Headquarters in Nakawa. URA was represented by several officials including: Assistant Commissioner Public & Corporate Affairs – Ibrahim K. Bbosa, Acting Manager for Tax Education – Michael Masembe, Applications Support – Sheilla Kobusoro, Business Analyst – Claire Asasira & Hafusah Ssegirinya from the Tax Literacy Unit.

Ibrahim Bbosa informed the UIA Team that URA’s biggest task is to mobilize enough tax to finance the National Budget. He cited Kenya where the tax body - Kenya Revenue Authority collects up to 95% of their National Budget. He lauded UIA’s efforts to work with URA and called on more institutions to work closely with URA and appreciate their agenda.

Jonan commended URA for their commitment to the partnership with UIA. He also admitted that just like URA, UIA grapples with the challenge of penetrating the informal sector. He said that they would love to see insurance extended to as many Ugandans as possible. The UIA CEO also praised URA for its digitization efforts adding that UIA would like to pick a leaf.

Our Vice Chairman - Paul Muwanga said that the visit was steered by 3 major reasons; to benchmark, to have a meeting of the minds, and to explore more areas of collaboration. He also lauded URA on aggregation which helps to reduce costs in collecting premiums on the insurers’ side. He added that he was keen to see the same for other areas of collaboration like Motor Third Party Insurance & Workers’ Compensation.

At the meeting, UIA Vice Chairman & the CEO were joined by , EC Member and CEO Jubilee Health Insurance – Mr. Dan Musiime, General Manager, UAP Old Mutual - Mr. James Maguru, Life & Pensions Manager - Badru Bengo, Manager Non-Life - Juliet Igonu and the Market Development Manager - Annet Katusiime.
