FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) ON MOTOR THIRD PARTY (MTP) INSURANCE:

1. What is Motor Third-Party Insurance?

  • Motor Third Party (MTP) insurance is a mandatory insurance policy required by law under the Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act of 1989.
    It protects vehicle owners against legal liability arising from bodily injury or death caused to third parties (passengers, pedestrians, or other road users) in the event of an accident involving the insured vehicle.

2. What does Motor Third Party Insurance cover?

The policy covers:

  • Death or bodily injury to third parties caused by the insured vehicle.
  • Legal liability of the vehicle owner or driver for such injury or death.

Note: MTP It does not cover damage to your own vehicle, theft, fire, property damage, or injuries to the driver/owner.

3. What is the limit of liability under MTP?

Under Ugandan law:

  • UGX 1,000,000 per person for injury or death.
  • UGX 10,000,000 aggregate per accident (the total limit payable for all persons injured or killed in a single accident).

4. What law governs Motor Third Party Insurance?

  • Motor Third Party Insurance is governed by the Motor Vehicle Insurance (Third Party Risks) Act, 1989, which makes it compulsory for every vehicle on the road in Uganda to have a valid MTP policy.

5. How long is an MTP sticker valid and when do I renew it?

  • A Motor Third Party policy is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
  • Renewal should be done before expiry to avoid driving uninsured hence the one-month window period in the MTP portal.
  • Many insurers provide SMS or email reminders for renewal.

6. How can I verify or check for validity of my Digital Sticker?

  1. This can be verified by the police using the express penalty system Machine  
  2. You can also verify your insurance sticker by dialing the official USSD code by dialing the following:

ANS; MTN *165* 4*5*5#   then input your vehicle   registration number.

ANS; AIRTEL *1857*6*1# then input your vehicle registration number.

The feedback from the search will be in one of the following three forms depending on the insurance status of your vehicle as explained below;

  • Vehicles without Motor third party insurance and those whose MTP sticker are left with one month to expire:

      ANS; The system will provide an option for premium payment to obtain MTP 

  • Vehicle paid for Motor Third party but the sticker is not printed or generated in case of digital

      ANS; This vehicle has already paid for Motor third Party 

  • Vehicle with the running sticker (paid for and printed or generated)

     ANS: Vehicle has a running policy with e.g., prim insurance company from 25th July 2025to 24th July          2025

7. How can I pay for Motor Third Party Insurance?

You can pay through the following options:

Mobile Money Payments

  • MTN Mobile Money: Dial *165*4*5*5#
  • Airtel Money: Dial *185*7*6*1#

Bank and Agent Payments

  • Pay Way terminals nationwide
  • Centenary Bank branches
  • Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) branches

After payment, visit your insurer or licensed MTP agent with your reference number to have your digital sticker generated or printed.

8. What is a Digital Motor Third Party Sticker?

A digital sticker is an electronic proof of Motor Third Party insurance, generated through IRA-approved systems.
It contains a unique QR code for verification and is designed to:

  • Minimize or eliminate fraud and fake stickers
  • Prevent duplication of stickers
  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Enhance compliance with insurance and traffic laws

9. How do I pay and obtain a Digital MTP Sticker?

  1. Initiate payment using your preferred platform:
  • MTN: Dial *165*4*5*5#
  • Airtel: Dial *185*7*6*1#
  • Or pay via Pay Way, Centenary Bank, or DTB
  1. Enter your Motor Vehicle Registration Number (e.g.  UBA 444 B)
  2. You will receive a Reference Number via SMS
  3. Present the Reference Number and phone number used for payment to your insurer or MTP agent
  4. The insurer/agent will generate a digital sticker, which will be sent to your email or WhatsApp for printing.

10. What other motor insurance covers are available besides MTP?

  • Enhanced Motor Third Party Insurance:
    Provides higher compensation limits and may include property damage cover or medical expenses.
  • Comprehensive Motor Insurance:
    Offers full protection covering own vehicle damage, theft, fire, vandalism, accidental damage, and third-party liability.

11.    Categories of Motor Third Party stickers.

         The following are the categories of motor third party stickers:

  • Private stickers          - These stickers are issued to personal vehicles or vehicles not engaged in commercial activities 
  • Commercial stickers   -These stickers are issued to commercial vehicles like passenger buses, taxis, trucks or any other vehicle engaged in commercial activities 
  • Motor Bike stickers    – These stickers are issued to motorbikes 
  • Transit stickers          -   These stickers are issued to new vehicles from the border to the car bond

A: Each sticker has the following details included:

  • Seating capacity 
  • Gross Weight 
  • Start and End date
  • Registration number and Make 
  • Chassis No
  • Issuing company 
  • Issuing officer 
  • Sticker type 
  • Sticker serial number 

Why does a comprehensive sticker delay or sometimes not reflected in the MTP system and EPS?

  • This happens when the insurance company delays to upload the sticker into the MTP system. 
  • Therefore, the Motorist (client) should always endeavor to remind the insurer to upload the comprehensive sticker into the system before starting of the journey.

14. What should I do to claim in case of an accident?

  1. Seek immediate medical assistance for the injured.
  2. Report the accident to the nearest police station.
  3. Notify your insurer as soon as possible.
  4. Submit all required documents, including police reports and vehicle registration details.
  5. The insurer will process your claim, usually within 3–5 working days after submission of complete documents.
